BAY OF WHALES - WHANGAPARAOA
By Susannah Law

Design Statement
This pillar features scenes about the local life and history of Whangaparaoa including sailing and shellfish gathering. The hibiscus flower represents the name often used for the Peninsula and surrounds "The Hibiscus Coast".

Hinemoa the Maori sea goddess breathes life into the sea which features commonly seen species of orca, dolphin, and stingray as well as sharks and sperm whale from Maori history. Rangitoto and Tiritiri islands are on the horizon and the birds reference our care for the environment with the predator free sanctuaries at Shakespear Park and Tiritiri Matangi Island.
